The International Institute of Humanitarian Law became recently an official member of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative.
Through a letter to Professor Pocar, President of the Institute, the Executive Director of the initiative thanked the Institute for supporting the Global Compact’s fundamental principles in the area of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption, welcoming its participation.
The letter highlighted the importance of “the active engagement of non-business stakeholders”, such as the Sanremo Institute, and considered such collaboration as fundamental to the development of the UNGC. “At the heart of the Global Compact“ – he writes – “is a conviction that organizational practices rooted in universal principles help the global marketplace to be more socially and economically inclusive, thus advancing collective goals of international cooperation, peace and development.” The Global Compact aims at supporting companies and institutions in developing a responsible way to doing business, aligned with its ten principles on human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.
This new membership once again reflects how highly the international community considers the excellent training activities of the Sanremo Institute, not only in the field of international humanitarian law but also in refugee and human rights law and in several other related branches of international law.
