On 25 and 26 September, the International Institute of Humanitarian Law (IIHL) hosted the Director of the National School for the Improvement of Magistrates of the Federal Military Justice (ENAJUM), a body linked to the Superior Military Court of the Federative Republic of Brazil.
During the visit, the ENAJUM delegation learned about IIHL’s organisational structure, how it works and the variety of courses and projects run by the Institute, such as training for military commanders, legal advisors, magistrates, members of the Public Prosecutor’s Office and other professionals linked to the International Law of Armed Conflict by duty or academic interest.
An Academic Cooperation Agreement was signed between IIHL and ENAJUM with the aim of facilitating the exchange of information, experiences and personnel between the signatory institutions, as well as the development of joint activities of an academic nature related to the broad context of IHL and IHRL in scenarios of armed conflict and other situations of violence.
The Director of ENAJUM, Minister Artur Vidigal, highlighted the importance of collaborative construction with the Institute, as a world reference centre in IHL education, for the training and improvement of Military Justice magistrates, in search of efficient specialised judicial provision in armed conflicts.
At the end of the visit, Secretary General a.i. Gian Luca Beruto emphasised the importance of the traditional cooperation between IIHL and Brazilian institutions. The exchange will bring results with studies of the current scenarios in Latin America and the vision under the aegis of IHL for the improvement of magistrates.
For the Institute, the Directorate of Special Projects and Training Activities for Latin America is leading this initiative with Prof. Roberto A. Moreno, Colonel (retd) Eduardo Bittencourt Cavalcanti and Ms Sara Rossi.
The ENAJUM delegation was present with its Director Minister Dr Artur Vidigal; Vice-Director Minister Admiral Leonardo Puntel; Judge Dr. Luiz Fernando Pessôa; and Captain (retd) Alexandre Peres.
